There have been some heavy snowstorms in my locale, with accumulations well over 1m (40"). Though the roof can bear the weight, ice-dams at the gutters cause melt water to go underneath, and that water trickles out under the eaves, or even on an inside wall.
Climbing on the roof in icy conditions is not an option. How could I deliver some salt to the roof to cave a channel, letting the melt water drain?
By dissolving calcium chloride (CaCl2) deicer in water, making a concentrated solution, I was able to use a toy water squirter, such as those shown below, to shoot the deicer onto the roof and gutters. The current price is less US$2 for one squirter.
Those toys easily reached even the peak of the roof, perhaps 5 m (15ft) overhead. It took some practice to limit spray to just the edges. Now to see if it really helps...
