How can I import the private keys of a MultiBit Classic wallet into Electrum?

I had an old Multibit Classic program on my computer. I was able to open the private key using OpenSSL. I downloaded Electrum to my computer and created a new wallet importing the private key. However, now when I open Electrum I don't see my bitcoins, the balance and history show empty. Is there anything I can do?

First of all, you need to check with a block explorer if the Multibit Address in your wallet has funds. Many multibit wallet addresses are not synced with the block chain and therefor could be empty.

Next, when you have the address showing funds and have the private key go to import it into Electrum but have to know which derivation path to use.

You can choose 3 derivation paths depending on the wallet address format. Default is P2SH, but if your address format is bech32 or p2wpkh then you need to add a string before the private key.

The default format for electrum is legacy, but if you have used other you need to specify that by adding a string before the private key Use segwit beech32: p2wpkh: or segwit : p2wpkh-p2sh:

then the private key after the :

Good Luck
