Ubuntu upgrade failure recovery

Ubuntu upgrade failure recovery

I am completely new to this. Yesterday I tried to update Ubuntu 22.04.5 to 24.04. After addressing all of the errors by typing in the sudo command I got to the end and restarted my laptop which is a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme. After logging in, I got the screen showed in the attached screenshot. I tried pressing Ctrl+Alt+F3 (and F4 and F5), and none of that got me past the "Oh no" screen.

I sincerely hope that I've included enough information for my question to make sense. Could someone please tell me something else I can try?

Comment: Welcome to ASK. If you cannot get a terminal screen reboot, from grub, into recovery mode. If it doesn't pause in the grub menu then assert ESC (UEFI) or SHIFT (BIOS) mode. Boot from advanced setting -> recovery mode. From there you should be able to get a terminal. Then a possible starting point would be 'sudo apt update'; 'sudo apt upgrade' If that doesn't fix anything with some extra installs then you could try 'sudo apt install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop'
